A celebration of my favourite films released this year!

It is, for better or for worse, listicle time. While I try to avoid them, there is something about coming to the end of the year that makes them so enticing. So, rather than clogging up my usual writing home of Counter Arts with my quickfire lists, I figured I’d simply self publish them as bonuses.

Living in the UK but following worldwide premiere dates does mean that my list will be missing some phenomenal films which were technically released in the UK in 2024 — The Holdovers (released here in January), The Iron Claw and Sing Sing (released to my local cinema in August!) are the most relevant examples, they’d likely be my top 2 picks if I counted them! — but let’s just celebrate some of the finest films offered in what I would say was generally a pretty lacking year. No ‘worst of’ lists here! Instead, here’s a snappy recount of my favourite films of 2024, with links to full reviews for those curious. Here’s to another year of cinematic escapism and visually rendered art.

Alien: Romulus (Fede Alvarez)

As much as some of the tasteless choices made regarding characters and some of the frustrating franchise call-backs irk me, there’s no denying Romulus’ visceral qualities or its edge-of-your-seat set-pieces.
