I think the key difference is that Payne really makes clear how terrible Matthew Broderick’s character is supposed to be. He’s deeply unlikeable and is consistently punished (rightly so) for his actions. Miller, here, is given a pass for the most part and just grumbles a bit about things.

But yes, the tolerance has certainly been shrinking! You’re totally right about that.
