I am certainly on the side that believes that Fincher cast Pitt knowing that he was creating this irony. His film is brutal to itself, and to the book which it is based on. I think that Durden is one of the most interesting characters in 90s film because of how he captures that complete fantasy. He's similar to Michael Douglas' character in Falling Down in a way - an entertained fantasy gone horribly wrong.
