Great point! I recently finished a large collection of his poems - 500-600 pages - and I agree. In fact, you really find yourself feeling for him at certain points, particularly when writing so vulnerably about dying towards the end of his life. Quite a different portrait as in his novels, haha. I find myself with that same dissonance - I laugh at his writing, but then am shocked that these things can be funny. It’s all in his descriptions and attitude, I think, but it’s both shocking and impossibly readable.
